Starting with sodium chloride how would you proceed to prepare sodium metal ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Metallic sodium can be obtained by the electrolysis of a mixture of sodium chloride (40%) and calcium chloride (60%) in fused state. The function of calcium chloride is to lower the reaction temperature from `807^@C` (m.p. of NaCI) to about `577^@C`. The molten sodium metal thus obtained is liberated at the cathode.
Overall reaction: `NaCl to Na^(+) + Cl^(-)`
At cathode : `Na^(+) + e to Na`,
At anode: `Cl^(-) to Cl + e, Cl + Cl to Cl_2 uarr`
