Why are lithium salts commonly hydrated ...

Why are lithium salts commonly hydrated and those of the other alkali ions usually anhydrous?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

As `Li^(+)` is the smallest ion among all the alkali metal ions, it can polarise water molecules more easily than the other alkali metal ions. So, numerous water molecules get attached to lithium salts as water of crystallisation. However, this is not observed in case of other alkali metal ions. Thus, lithium salts are commonly hydrated (Example: `LiCl.2H_2O`) and those of the other alkali ions are usually anhydrous.

Alkali metal salts are water soluble and ionic in nature. Two factors such as lattice energy and hydration energy decide the extent of solubility. These two factors are opposing in nature solubility will be high if hydration energy is high. Higher will be the extent of hydration if size of the ion is smaller. Hydration of ions is exothermic process.Hydration energy also plays a role in deciding reducing power of alkali metals in solution.
