Both alkaline earth metals and their salts are diamagnetic in nature. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The alkaline earth metals are diamagnetic in nature as all the orbitals are fully filled with paired electrons. The ions of alkaline earth metals, `M^(2+)` have stable noble gas configuration in which all the orbitals are doubly occupied. Also, there are no unpaired electrons in the anions. Hence, the salts of alkaline earth metals are also diamagnetic in nature.
