In the hydrated ion, `[Be(H_2O)_4]^(2+)`, water molecules are extensively polarised, ultimately leading to weakening of the O-H bond. Hydrolysis takes place and the solution becomes distinctly acidic: `(H_2O)_3Be^(2+) - OH_2 + H_2O to (H_2O)_3 Be^(+) - OH + H_3O^(+)`,
