`2C_(6)H_(5)overset(+1)(C)HO+NaOHtoC_(6)H_(5)overset(+6)COONa+C_(6)H_(5)overset(-1)(C)H_(2)OH`
In this reaction ,the oxidation number of carboon in the benzene ring does not change .However ,oxidation number of carbon in -CHO group (oxidation number of carbon in -CHO is +1) changes to higher oxidation +3 in -COONa group and lower oxidation number -1 in -`CH_(2)OH`group .Here -CHO group gets simulatenously oxidised & reduced .Hence it is a disproportionation reaction.
