`2MnO_(4)^(-)+5SO_(2)+H_(2)Oto5SO_(4)^(2-)+2Mn^(2+)+4H_(3)O^(+)`

In this reaction the oxidation number of Mn decreases from `(+7to+2)`and the oxidation of s incrases from `(+4to+6)`.So this reaction causes reduction of `MnO_(4)^(-)`and Oxidation of `SO_(2)`. Hence ,the reaction is a redox reaction .Here `MnO_(4)^(-)` acts as an oxidant and `SO_(2)`as a reductant.
