Balance the following equation with the ...

Balance the following equation with the help of oxidation number method.
`Fe_(3)O_(4)+COtoFeO+CO_(2)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In `Fe_(3)O_(4)`, oxidation number of each Fe- atom =+2.67.
In the reaction from +2.67 to 2 .SO decrease in oxidation number of each Fe- atom =+0.67
Therefore fro three Fe -atoms , total the decrease in oxidation number =3x(+0.67). =+2 unit.
On the other hand ,the oxidation number of C increases from +2 to +4 .Hence increase in oxidation number of C=2 unit .
Therefore in the reaction ,`Fe_(3)O_(4)` and CO will react with each other in the molar ratio of 2:2 or 1:1 .
Again 1 molecular of `Fe_(3)O_(4)`will produce 3 moleuclar of FeO .Hence ,the balance equation will be-
`Fe _(3)O_(4)+COto3FEO+CO_(2)`
