Determine the values of x and y in the following balanced equation:
`5H_(2)O_(2)+xCIO_(2)+2OH^(-)toxCI^(-)+yO_(2)+6H_(2)O`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Oxidation half - reaction
`H_(2)O_(2)+2OH^(-)toO_(2)+2H_(2)O+2e`
Reduction reaction :
`CIO_(2)+2H_(2)O+5etoCI^(-)+4OH^(-)`
Multiplying equation (1) and (2) by 5 and 2 respectively and adding the equations, we get -
`5H_(2)O_(2)+10OH^(-)+2CIO_(2)+4H_(2)Oto2CI^(-)+5O_(2)+10H_(2)O+8OH^(-)`
`therefore5H_(2)O_(2)+2CIO_(2)+2OH^(-)to2CI^(-)+5O_(2)+6H_(2)O`
Compating equation (3) with the given equation we get- x=2 and y=5.
