Find the oxidation number of carbon in m...

Find the oxidation number of carbon in methanal and methanoic acid.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Methanal : The oxidation number of Cin HCHO molecule =0
Methanoic acids : Suppose the oxidation number of C in methanoic acid =x.
`therefore underset(("for two H-atoms"))(2xx(+1)+x)underset(("for two O-atoms"))(+2xx(-2)=0)or,x=+2`
Hence ,oxidation number of C in HCOOH molecule =+2.
