What will be the change in oxidation number of Mn when `MnO_(2)` is melted with solid `KNO_(3)`&KOH?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Potassium manganate is produced when `MnO_(2)` is melted in pressence of solid KNO_(3) andNaOH.
`overset(+4)(M)nO_(2)+2KOH+KNO_(3)toK_(2)overset(+6)(Mn)O_(4)+KNO_(2)+H_(2)O`
So in the reaction ,the oxidation number of Mn increases from +4 to +6 i.e., change in oxdiation number of Mn =6-4=2 unit.
