When an aldehyde ` (R - CHO)` reacts with Tollen.s reagent , the following reaction takes place :
` R = CHO + 2[Ag (NH_(3))_(2)]^(+) + 3OH^(-) to RCOO^(-) + 2Ag + 4NH_(3) + 2H_(2) O `
