Which of the following correctly represents copper sulphate pentahydrate ?

A

`[Cu(SO_(4))(H_(2)O)_(3)]2H_(2)O`

B

`[Cu(SO_(4))(H_(2)O)_(5)]`

C

`[Cu(H_(2)O)_(4)]SO_(4).H_(2)O`

D

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
C

Chemical formula of copper sulphate pentahydrate `[Cu(H_(2)O_(4)]SO,H_(2)O`
Copper sulphate pentahydrate contains `5H_(2) O` that
is 5 water of of crystallisation . The 5 molecules of water present in the crystal framework of the molecule where four water molecules are coordinated to `Cu^(2+)` while one is hydrogen bonded with `SO_(4)^(2-)`
The copper (II) is bound to four water molecules in a square planner geometery and two oxygen atoms from two sulphate ions (one `H_(2)O ` is H bonded here )
Hence correct formula is `[Cu(H_(2) O)]SO_(4)H_(2)O`
