A ray of light is incident on the plane ...

A ray of light is incident on the plane face of a liquid at an angle `45^(@)` and due to refraction the ray is deviated through an angle `15^(@)`. Calculate the refractive index of the liquid.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Angle of deviation of a ray for refractive from a rarer medium to a denser medium, `delta = i - r or, 15^(@) = 45^(@) - r or, r = 30^(@)`
`therefore` Refractive index of the liquid with respect to air,
`mu = (sini)/(sinr) = (sin 45^(@))/(sin30^(@)) = (1/sqrt2)/(1/2) = sqrt(2) = 1.414`
