Can the directions of velocity and acceleration be different?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Velocity and acceleration of a body can be in different directions. For example if a body moves towards east with a retardation, its velocity is directed towards east. But as retardation is negative acceleration, the acceleration is directed towards west.

A particle is rotating along a circular path at uniform speed. Indicate the direction of displacement, velocity and acceleration of the particle at any moment with the help of a diagram.

A particle is in linear simple harmonic motion between two points A and B, 10 cm apart. Take the direction from A to B, as positive direction and give the signs of velocity and acceleration on the particle when it is (i) at the end B, (ii) at 3 cm away from A going towards B.
