A force is applied on a particle in a lift moving upward with an acceleration `alpha`. Can Newton's second law of motion be applied to describe the motion of this particle?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

A lift moving with an acceleration forms a non-inertial frame of reference. Newton.s second law of motion is not applicable in a non-inertial frame of reference directly. In such frames, a pseudo force acts on the particle in addition to the real force applied. Newton.s second law of motion can be applied if the expressions for both the real and the pseudo force are known.

A particle moves with uniform acceleration and the distance travelled in t - th second is s_(t) = 3 + 2t . Find the initial velocity of the particle .

Statement I : A particle moving with uniform acceleration has its displacement proportional to the square of time. Statement II : If the motion of a particle is represented by a straight line on the velocity -time graph its acceleration is uniform.

A particle is moving in a circular path of radius r with constant speed. Due to change in the direction of motion of the particle continously, the velocity of the particle is changing . But the kinetic energy of the particle remains the same. Explain why ?
