A body initially at rest, breaks up into two pices of masses 2M and 3M respectively, together , having a total kinetic energy E. The piece of mass 2M , after breaking up, has a kinetic energy

A

`(2E)/5`

B

`E/2`

C

`E/5`

D

`(3E)/5`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

From the law of conservation momentum , `p_1=p_2`
Kinetic energy ,`E=(p^2)/(2m) or, E prop 1/m`
`therefore (E_1)/(E_2)=(m_2)/(m_1)=(3M)/(2M)=3/2`
`therefore (E_1)/(E_1+E_2)=3/(3+2)=3/5`
`or, (E_1)/(E)=3/5 or, E_1=(3E)/5`
