The mass of the moon is `1/(80)` th of the mass of the earth and its radius is `1/4` th of that of the earth. Compare the accelerations due to gravity on the earth's and the moon's surface

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Let the mass of the earth be M and its radius R, the acceleration due to gravity on the earth.s surface Is `g=(GM)/(R^2)`. Similarly, taking mass and radius of the moon as m and r respectively , acceleration due to gravity on the moon.s sufrace is `g^.=(GM)/(r^2)`.
`therefore (g^.)/(g)=m/M*(R^2)/(r^2)=m/M*(R/r)^2=1/(80)xx(4/1)^2=1/5`.
hence, the value of the acceleration due to gravity on the moon.s surface is `1/5` th of that on the surface of the earth.
