A body is released in space from an artificial satellite moving in a fixed orbit. What happens to the body ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The released body will revolve around the earth in the same orbit and with the same velocity as that of the satellite . Gravitational pull of the earth supplies the necessary centripetal force to the body for maintaining the orbital motion. In addition, orbital speed does not depend on the mass of the orbiting body.
It should be noted that if a small body is projected with an initial velocity from an orbiting satellite out into space, there will be a change in the orbit of the body. Using the principle of conservation of angular momentum, in this case,it can be shown that there will be a small change in the orbit of the satellite also.
