What will be the change in the mutual force of gravitation between two bodies when the mass of each body as well as the distance separating them are doubled ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In the first case, force gravitation `F_1=(Gm_1m_2)/(r^2)`
where `m_1 and m_2` are masses of the two bodies and r is the distance separating them.
In the second case, force of gravitation
`F_2=G*(2m_1*2m_2)/((2r)^2) =G*(m_1m_2)/(r^2)`
`therefore F_2=F_1`, i.e., there will be no change in the gravitational force.

According to Newton's law of gravitation , everybody in this universe attracts every other body with a force, which is directly proportional to the product of their masses and the inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centres, i.e., F prop (m_1m_2)/(r^2) or F=G(m_1m_2)/(r^2) where G is universal gravitational constant =6.67xx10^(-11)N*m^2*kg^(-2) .
