For a steel wire, if the diameter is larger , it can with stand a greater load. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

We know that,
breaking stress `=(break i ng load)/(area of cross-section of the wire)`
or, breaking load=breaking stress `times` area of cross- section of the wire
`=break i ng stresstimes(pid^2)/4`
[d=diameter of the wire]
Since for a particular material, the breaking stress is fixed,a wire with a larger diameter (d) is able to withstand a greater load.
