A lead bullet has a volume of 2.5 cm^(3)...

A lead bullet has a volume of `2.5 cm^(3) " at " 0^(@)C`. Its volume increases by `0.021cm^(3)` when heated to `98^(@)C`. Find the coefficient of linear expansion of lead.

By definition, coefficient of volume expansion of lead, `gamma=(V_(t)-V_(0))/(V_(0)t)`
Given, `V_(t)-V_(0)=0.021 cm^(3), V_(0)=2.5cm^(3) " and " t=98^(@)C`
`therefore " " gamma=0.021/(2.5 times 98)=85.7 times 10^(-6@)C^(-1)`
`therefore` Coefficient of linear expansion of lead,
`alpha=gamma/3=(8.57 times 10^(-6))/3=2.86 times 10^(-6@)C^(-1).`
