Draw p-T graph for masses m and 2m of the same gas, when heated in a container of constant volume. Interpret the slopes.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The desired graphs are shown in fig.6.17.
The equation of state for mass m of a gas of molecular weight M is
`pV=m/MRT or,p=(mR)/(MV)T`
Given V=constant, so for any fixed mass, p= constant `times` T.
Thus, the p-T graph is a straight line passing through the origin [FIg.6.17].
Also the slope `(mR)/(MV)` is higher for a higher m.
`therefore` The slope of the graph for mass 2m is more than that for mass m.
For any temperature the value of p in the first case will be half of second case. `(BC=1/2 AC)`

Draw a graph of pressure (P) vs temperature (t) at constant volume.

At a constant pressure the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 mol of an ideal gas by 10^(@)C is x kJ. If the same increase in temperature were carried out at constant volume, then the heat required would be-

The temperature of a fixed mass of an ideal gas is changed from T_(1)K to T_(2)K(T_(2) > T_(1)) . Calculate the work done if the change is brought about at (i) constant pressure (ii) constant volume. Hence find from the first law of thermodynamics, in which case heat absorbed will be greater.
