Two cylinders A and B of equal capacity ...

Two cylinders A and B of equal capacity are connected to each other via a stopcock. A contains a gas at standard temperature and pressure. B is completely evacuated. The entire system is thermally insulated. The stopcock is now opened. Answer the following
(d) Do the intermediate states of the system (before settling to the final equilibrium state) lie on its p - V - T surface?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
No, since the process (called free expansion) is rapid and controlled. The intermediate states are non-equilibrium states and do not satisfy the gas equation. In due course, the gas does return to an equilibrium state.

Two cylinders A and B of equal capacity are connected to each other via a stopcock. A contains a gas at standard temperature and pressure. B is completely evacuated. The entire system is thermally insulated. The stopcock is now opened. Answer the following (b) What is the change in internal energy of the gas?

Two identical containers A and B with frictionless pistons contain the same ideal gas at the same temperature and of volume. The mass of the gas in A is m_A and that same in B is m_g . The gas in each cylinder is now allowed to expand isothermally to the same final volume 2V. The change in the pressure in A and B are found to be Deltap and 1.5 Delta p respectively then
