Find out the ratio of the rms speeds of hydrogen and nitrogen molecules at STP?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

According to Avogadro.s law at STP the volume of 1mol gas is 22.4 L
`therefore ` Density of hydrogen , `p_H=2/22.4g.L^-1`
and density of nitrogen ,`p_N=28/22.4g.L^-1`
`therefore` The ratio of the rms speeds of hydrogen and nitrogen is
`c_(H_2)/c_(N_2)=(sqrt((3p)/(p_H)))/sqrt((3p)/p_N)=sqrt(p_N/p_H)=sqrt(28/2)=sqrt(14/1)=3.74:1`
