The rms speed of oxygen gas molecules at...

The rms speed of oxygen gas molecules at STP is `4.5 times 10^4 cm.s^-1`. Find out the same for carbon dioxide gas molecules at STP. Given the molecular weights of oxygen and carbon dioxide are 32 and 44, respectively.

We know, `c=sqrt((3RT)/M)`
As the temperature is the same for both the gases, `c prop 1/sqrtM`.
So, `c_(O_2)/c_(CO_2)=sqrt(M_2/M_1)` [`M_1` molecular weight of `O_2`, `M_2` molecular weight of `CO_2`]
or,`c_(CO_2)=c_(O_2)=sqrt(M_1/M_2)=4.5times10^4timessqrt(32/44)`
`=3.84times10^4cm.s^-1`
