Some amount of oxygen gas contained in a vessel has a density of `1.429 kg.m^-3`. At STP. The temperature is increased until the pressure is doubled Neglecting the change in volume of the vessel, find the rms speed of the oxygen molecules.

Mass and volume of the gas remains the same so the density also remain the same.
So,`p=1.429 kg.m^-3=1.429 times 10^-3 g.cm^-3`
In the first case, rms speed of oxygen molecules
`c_1=sqrt((3p_1)/p)=sqrt((3times(76times13.6times980))/(1.429times10^-3))=46114 cm.s^-1`
In the second case `p_2=2p_1`
`thereforec_2/c_1=sqrt(p_2/p_1)=sqrt2`
or,`c_2=sqrt2c_1=46114timessqrt2=65215 cm.s^-1`
