Two ideal gases at absolute temperature ...

Two ideal gases at absolute temperature `T_1` and `T_2` are mixed with each other. IF the molecular mass and the number of molecules are `m_1,n_1` and `m_2,n_2`, respectively, find out the temperature of the mixture.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Molecular kinetic energy of the first gas = `n_1.3/2kT_1` and that of the second gas `=n_2.3/2kT_2`.
So the net energy `=3/2 k(n_1T_1+n_2T_2)`.
The number of molecules in the mixture =`n_1+n_2`. Let the temperature of the mixture be T.
THe total molecular kinetic energy =`(n_1+n_2).3/2kT`
From the principle of energy conservation
`(n_1+n_2).3/2kT=3/2k(n_1T_1+n_2T_2)`
or,`T=(n_1T_1+n_2T_2)/(n_1+n_2)`
