Two tuning forks A and B, when vibrated simultaneously, produce 5 beats per second . 40 cm and 40.5 cm lengths of a sonometer wire, kept in the same tension, are tuned with the forks A and B respectively. Find out the frequencies of the two tuning forks .

According to the question,
`n_(A) = (1)/(2 xx 40) sqrt((T)/(m)) and n_(B) = (1)/(2 xx 40.5 sqrt((T)/(m))`
`:. (n_(A))/(n_(B)) = (40.5)/(40) = (81)/(80) , ` clearly, `n_(A) gt n_(B)`
As the number of beats per second is 5, we have
`n_(A) - n_(B) = 5 "or" , (n_(A))/(n_(B)) - 1 = (5)/(n_(B))` or, `(81)/(80) - 1 = (5)/(n_(B))`
or, `(1)/(80) = (5)/(n_(B)) or , n_(B) = 400 ` Hz
`:. n_(A) = n_(B) + 5 = 400 + 5 = 405 ` Hz
