An air column, closed at one end and open at the other, resonates with a tuning fork when the smallest length of the column is 50 cm . The next larger of the column resonating with the same tuning fork is

A

100 cm

B

150 cm

C

200 cm

D

66.7 cm

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

For 1st resonance, length of the air column is `l_(1) = 50` cm
Let, for 2nd resonance the length of air column is `l_(2)` Resonant frequency for 2nd resonance ` n = (3V)/(4l_(2))`
`:. l_(1) = (V)/(4n) and l_(2) = (3V)/(4n)`
`:. l_(1) = (l_(2))/(3) or, l_(2) = 3l_(1) = 3 xx 50 = 150 ` cm
