Certain characteristic wavelength in the light from a galaxy has a longer wavelength compared to that from a terrestrial source . Is the galaxy approaching or receding ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The galaxy is receding .
It can be concluded from the increase in wavelength, i.e., decrease in frequency due to Doppler effect, that the distance between the source of light (the galaxy) and the observer (the earth) is gradually increasing . Hence, the galaxy is receding.
