Two poles of height 6 meters and 11 meteras stand vertically on a plane ground. If the distance between their feet is 12 meters. Find the distance between their tops.

Let AB and CD be the given vertically poles. Then
AB= 6m, CD= 11 m and AC= 12 m
Draw BE||AC, then
CE=AB= 6cm BE=AC= 12 m
DE=CD-CE=11m-6m = 5m
Now in right `triangleBED` we have
`BD^(2)= BE^(2)+DE^(2)= 12^(2)+5^(2)`
= 144 + 25 =`169 m^(2)`
BD = 13 m
Hence the distance between the poles = 13 m
