Suppose that the uncertainty in determining the position of an electron in an orbital is 0.6 Å. What is the uncertainty in its momentum?

Text Solution

`Deltax` = uncertainty in position of an electron = 0.6 Å
`= 0.6 xx 10^(-10) m`
`Delta p` = uncertainty in momentum = ?
Heisenberg.s uncertainty principle states that
`Deltax . Deltap ge h/(4 pi)`
`Deltap = h/(4 pi.Deltax)`
h = Planck.s constant
`= 6.626 xx 10^(-34) Kg m^2 s^(-1)`
`Deltap = (6.626 xx 10^(-34) Kg m^2 s^(-1))/(4 xx 3.14 xx 0.6 xx 10^(-10)m)`
`= (6.626 xx 10^(-34) xx 10^(10))/(7.536)`
Uncertainty in momentum = `0.8792 xx 10^(-24) Kg ms^(-1)`
(or)
`8.792 xx 10^(-25) Kg ms^(-1)`.
