`AlCl_(3)` behaves like a lewis acid. Substantiate this statement.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`AlCl_(3)` is electron deficient. It has three electrons in its valence shell. Al forms 3 bonds with chloride and hence outer shell has six electrons. It needs two more electrons to complete its octet so readily accepts electrons. Hence `AlCl_(3)` is a Lewis acid.
