Thermodynamically `CO_(2)` is more stable than CO, thus carbon monoxide has a relatively high tendancy to be oxidised to form carbon di oxide. As it is oxidised it reduces the other substance in the reaction.
Carbon monoxide acts as a strong reducing agent.
`CO+Fe_(2)O_(3)to 2Fe+3CO_(2)`
