Explain the concept of absolute zero of termerature on the basis of kinetic theory.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

According to kinetic to kinetic theory of gases, the pressure .P. exerted by one mole of an ideal gas is,
`P = 1/3 rhoC^(2) implies PV = 1/3 MC^(2)`
`implies 1/3 MC^(2) = RT to (1) ( :. PV = RT)`
Absolute zero:
When `T = 0`, from equation (1), `C = 0`.
Hence, absolute zero of temperature may be defined as that temperature at which the root mean square velocity (C) of the gas molecules reduce to zero.
It means, molecular motion ceases at absolute zero.
This definitaion holds in cases of an ideal gas or perfect gas.
