Why is the weight of an object on the moon is `(1)/(6)`th its weight on the earth?

Text Solution

Mass of the moon is less than the moon of earth
`W_(c) = G (M xx m)/(RL)`
`W_(m) = G. (7.36 xx 10^(22) kg xx m)/((1.74 xx 10^(6) m)^(2))`
`W_(m) = 2.431 xx 10^(10)` GM
`W_(c ) = 1.474 xx 10^(11) ` GM
`therefore (W_(m))/(W_(e )) = (2.431 xx 10^(10))/(1.474 xx 10^(11)) = 0.165 = (1)/(6)`
