Some of the earliest experiments on phototropism were carried out by Charles Darwin and his son Francis in the 1880s. They observed the effects of directional light on young grass seedlings. When grass seeds germinate. The leaves are initially proctected by a cylindrical sheath called a coleoptile. The coleoptiles are ideal for studying phototropism.

Figure 13.10 shows the effect of light on the rate of photosynthesis. Based on the graph, answer the following questions: (a) At which point/s (A, B or C) in the curve is light a limiting factor? (b) What could be the limiting factor/s in region A? (c) What do C and D represent on the curve?

A natural occurring class of plant hormones cytokinins has been found to help increase cotton yields during drought conditions. It has been observed that young cotton seedlings have small root system, making it difficult for them to reach available soil water. Cytokinins assists the young plants in water stress defences, promoting the plant to quickly build a bigger root system to access deep soil mosture. To be effective this phytohormone should be at an early stage of development. Which hormone is synthesized at the shoot - tip of plant body ?
