Once the pollen grains are deposited on the stigma of a flower the flower gets ready for the next event which is fertilization ?
The main events leading to fertilization are the following :
a. The ripe stigma secretes a substance which induces the pollen grains on it to germinate by sending out pollen tubes all the way down the style to the ovary.
b. The pollen tube continues to grow until it reaches the ovule. It passes through the micropyle into the ovule.
c. The pollen tube carries a male gamete to meet a female gamete in an ovule. The ovary contains ovules and each ovule has an egg cell. The male germ cell produced by the pollen grain fuses with the female gamete present in the ovule. The fusion of the germ cells (fertilization) gives a zygote which s capable of growing into a new plant. The changes that take place in a flower after fertilization are given below.
a. The ovule develops a tough coat and gradually gets converts in a seed. This contains the future plant
b. The zygote divides several times to form an embryo : within the ovule.The ovum develops: into the embryo of the seed
c. The ovary grows rapidly and ripens to form a fruit.
The petals, stamens. style and stigma may shrivel and fall off.
The stalk of the flower forms the stalk of the fruit
