Explain `sp^(3)d^(2)` hybridization `SF_(6)` molecule.

Text Solution

Sulphur hexafluoride has one sulphur and six fluorine atoms, Sulphur atoms has six unpaired electrons in the excited state.
S (ground state) `: [Ne] 3s^(1) 3p_(x)^(1), 3p_(x)^(1), 3p_(y)^(1), 3d_(xy)^(1), 3d_(xy)^(1)`

During the formation `SF_(6), 3s` three 3p and two 3d orbitals mix to form `sp^(3)d^(2)` hydrid orbital. These hybrid orbitals are oriented towares six corners of an octahedron.

The six hybrid ortbihals of sulphur overlpa with six `2p_(x)` orbitals fluorine to form six-covalent bonds. Hence the molecule of `SF_(6)` octahedral structure.
