What is 'Disproportionation' of an oxidation state Give one sample of disproportionation reactions in an aqueous solution.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In a disproportionation reaction, same substance undergoes oxidation (increase in oxidation number)as well as reduction (decrease in oxidation number) resulting in the formation of two different products.
In other words, same substance is behaving as oxidizing agent for one molecule and at the same time as reducing agent for another molecule.
E.g.(i) `3MnO_(4)^(2-)+4H^(+) to underset ((+7)) (2MnO_(4)^(2-)) +underset((+4)) (MnO_(2)) +2H_(2)  O`
Oxidation state of `MnO_(4)^(2-)=(6)`
(ii) `3CrO_(4)^(3-)+8H^(+) to underset((6))(2CrO_(4)^(2-))+underset((3))(Cr_(2)^(3+))+4H_(2)O`
