(i) When phenol is heated with chloroform and sodium hydroxide solution. dium salt of salicyladehyde is obtained which on acidification gives salicyladehyde.

(b) Phenol is weaker acid than carbonic acid `(H_2 CO_3)` and hence does not liberate from sodium bicarbonate.
