Among methonic acid and ethanoic acid which is more acidic and why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Methanoic acid is more acidic `HCOOH > C_2H_5COO`H Electron releasing substituents like alkyl groups (`C_2H_5`) tend to increase the electron density on oxygen atom of O.H bond by existing +1 effect, hence release of proton becomes difficult by making O-H bond stroger as compared to menthanoic acid. In methanoic acid. In methanoic acid release of proton became easier. Hence methanoic acid is stronger acid.
