Explain Cannizzaro reaction with an example.

When aldehydes which do not contain alpha-hydrogen atom react with sodium or potassium hydroxide,they undergo self oxidation and reduction to form alcohol and a salt of the carboxylic acid. This reaction is called Cannizaro.a reaction.
