The elements of 3d transition series are given as :
Sc Ti V Cr Mn Fe Co Ni Cu Zn
Answer the following :
(i) Write the element which shows maximum number of oxidation states. Give reason.
(ii) Which elements has the highest m.p?
(iii) Which element is a strong oxidizing agent in +3 oxidation state and why ?

(i) Mn shows maximum no. of oxidation states because the electronic confutation is 3d5 `4S^(2)` and 4S are close in energy. It has maximum no. of e- s to lose or share. Hence, It shows maximum no. of oxidation states.
(ii)k Chromium has highest m.p.
(iii) Scandium shows only + 3 oxidation state.
(iv) Mn is a strong oxidizing agent in +3 oxidation state as Mn3+ is 3d4 whereas, Mn2+ is `3d^(5)` system which is more stable due to partial filled electronic configuration.
