Give reasons for the following observation:
(a)The element carbon forms a very large number of compounds.
(b)Air holes of a gas burner have to be adjusted when the heated vessels get blackened by the flame.
c)Use of synthetic detergents causes pollution of water.

Text Solution

a)Carbons forms large numbers of compounds since carbon is small in size can form stable covalent bonds and it shows tetravalency.
(b)Air holes of gas burner are made open.So that air can pass through, which is needed for complere combustion,so that heated vessels so do not ger blackened.
c)Some synthetic detergents are non-boidegradable ,therefore, cause pollution of water.

Give reasons for the following: a. Ionic compounds in general have high melting and boiling points. b. Highly reactive metals cannot be obained from their oxides by heating them with carbon. c. Copper vessel get a green coat when left exposed to air in the rainy season.

Atoms of eight elements A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H have the same number of electronic shells but different in their outermost shells. It was found that elements A and G combine to form an ionic compound which can also be extracted from sea water. Oxides of the elements A and B are basic in nature while those of E and F are acidic. The oxide of elements D is almost neutral. Answer the following questions based on the information given here in : (i) To which group or period of the periodic table do the listed elements belong ? (ii) Which one of the eight elements is likely to be a noble gas? (iii) Which one of the eight elements would have the largest atomic radius ? (iv) Which two elements amongst these are likely to be the non-metals? (v) Which one of these eight elements is likely to be a semi-metal or metalloid ?

Properties of the elements are given below. Where would you locate the following elements in the periodic table? a] A soft metal stored under kerosene. b] An element with variable (more than one) valency stored under water. c] An element which is tetravalent and forms the basis of organic chemistry d] An element which is an inert gas with atomic number 2. e] An element whose thin oxide layer is used to make other elements corrosion resistant by the process of "anodising".

An element occupies group number 1 and period number 2. This element burns with air and forms compound A. With water, it gives compound B, with hydrogen it forms an ionic compound C. Identify the elements, A, B and C.

Four elements A, B, C and D have atomic numbers 12, 13, 14 and 15 respectively. Answer the following questions giving reasons : (i) What is the number of valence electrons and valency of D? (ii) Which of them will have largest atomic radii ? (iii) Which of these elements will form the most basic oxide ?

An element occupies group number 1 and period number 3. This element heated in air gives compound A. With water it gives compound B - a strong base. With ammonia gives compound C, which is used as a reducing agent in organic chemistry. Identify the element A,B and C.
