Why are lysosomes known as suicide bags?...

Why are lysosomes known as suicide bags?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Lysosomes are membrane-bound spherical structures which contain hydrolytic (digestive) enzymes. These enzymes are capable of digesting all organic materials, cell organelles and even cells. The membrane of lysosome prevents the enzymes from escaping into the cytoplasm and destroying it. Therefore, lysosomes are also called 'suicidal bags'.
