How `H_(2)SO_(4)" and HNO_(3)` acids affect our heritage monuments such as Taj Mahal ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Taj Mahal is made of marble (Calcium carbonate). Sulphuric acid and nitric acid (present in acid rain) react with marble and corrode it. Following reactions occur :
`{:(CaCO_(3)+H_(2)SO_(4),to,CaSO_(4)+CO_(2)+H_(2)O),(CaCO_(3)+HNO_(3),to,Ca(NO_(3))_(2)+CO_(2)+H_(2)O):}`
