(a) Nitrogen gas forms 78% of the air. It cannot be used as such by plants and animals. It must be converted into biologically acceptble forms. A number of microoganisms take up free atmospheric nitrogen and convert it into ammonia that combines with organic acids to form amino acids. The latter are form proteins The process is called biological nitrogen fixation.
(b) Microorganisms involved in biological introgen fixation are-free living bacteria (Azobacter and Clostridium), symbiotic bacteria (Rhizhium) and blue green algae.
