KF has NaCl type of Unit Cell with radius of` K^+` and `F^-` ions 132 and 135 pm respectively. a) What is the shortest iK-F distance? b) What is the edge length of unit cell? c) What is the closest K-K distance

Text Solution

a) The shortest `K^(+)` and `F^(-)` distance will be internuclear distance , i.e .,
`r^(+) + r^(-) = 132 + 135 = 267 `pm
b) In NaCl unit cell ,
`a = (r^(+) + r^(-) ) xx 2 = 267 xx 2 = 534 ` pm
c) Distance between adjacent edge centres
` = (a)/(sqrt2) = 377.6 ` pm
