Among the following, identify the species with an atom in `+6` oxidation state.

A

`MnO_(4)^(-)`

B

`Cr(CN)_(6)^(3-)`

C

`NiF_(6)^(2-)`

D

`CrO_(2)CI_(2)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

Chromyl chloride is a chemical compound with the formula `CrO_(2)Cl_(2)`. This compound is an opaque dark blood-red liquid at room temperature and pressure. It is tetrahedral, somewhat like `SO_(2)Cl_(2)`. `CrO_(2)Cl_(2)` is similar to the most commonly encountered chromium(VI) derivative chromate, `[CrO_(4)]^(2-)` , both are tetrahedral Cr(VI) compounds. They differ in physical properties, one is a liquid and the other forms salts. And they differ in oxidizing power as well.
